Cyc
One of the biggest problems in AI is teaching a machine what is 'common sense'. Back in 1984, Doug Lenat joined MCC and started entering facts into a database called Cyc, and simultaneously started developing software to derive inferences from those facts. He hoped teaching a machine about the world would enable it to apply common sense to logical deduction. In 1994, right on schedule, MCC spun out the Cyc project and started Cycorp in order to commercialize the software. Cyc is the biggest ever database about the world.
