(comments:1) Olympic Medals Britain Could Actually Win
Just came up with this, in conversation with a friend, after noting that the US have won 23 gold and 65 total, with the UK in 9th with 7 gold and 22 total (Germany is in 6th with 8 gold and 29 total).

Medals we could win easily:

  • Competitive Queuing
  • Hating the French
  • Discussing the Weather
  • Planning Travel Routes
  • Bemoaning the Cod Quota
  • Writing Letters To The Editor
  • The Decline of Schools
  • The Decline of the British Empire
  • Nothing Is As Good As It Used To Be
  • Stubbornly Refusing To Learn Foreign Languages
  • Being Indignant About Just About Everything
  • Lurid Newspaper Headline Writing
  • Performing Major Road Repairs During Rush Hour
  • How Not to Run the Railways
  • Privatisation for Fun and Profit
  • The Art Of Unwrapping, Running Under the Cold Tap, And Re-Wrapping A Sandwich Thus Keeping It Sellable For A Good Week And A Half (Sponsored by British Rail)
  • Eliminating Whole Industries At A Stroke
  • Bad Industrial Relations

And of course, drumroll please.....:

  • Preparing For Emergencies!

(comments:0) While we're on the subject of TV cheese...
... my own arrangement of an Abba filler track the BBC used to play us in the early 80's, while we waited for schools' programmes to start for the day.

Okay, it's 70's medley cheese - but hey, you didn't pay for it! :-)

Abba Medley (caution: link is an mp3 and is almost 10 MB - broadband only - sorry!)
(comments:0) Diffusion - DnB TV Themes
... this guy's taken a few UK TV themes from our youth and Drum n' Bass remixed them. Unfortunately they're probably only funny if you've (mis)spent your formative years in front of the telly....

... not like I did, of course ...

(comments:1) Films to look forward to or avoid
A short cinematic post for you all, courtesy of Fox Searchlight Pictures.

For you Scrubs fans, Garden State is directed by, written by, and stars Zach Braff. And Natalie Portman. :) Check out the trailer, but don't hold your breath waiting for it to appear in cinemas here. No release date planned.

I Heart Huckabees is an existential comedy with an all-star cast. Looks quirky. Trailer here. It will have a limited release in the US on 1st October with a planned German release of 10 February 2005. Can't make my mind up on this one.

Napolean Dynamite is a hit-and-miss nerd film about a guy who's out to prove he's got, er, nothing to prove. No German release date. Thank god.

And finally, Fox Searchlight Pictures has an 'independent and arthouse films blog'. Check or avoid as you please.

(comments:0) One for the clique of english nursery-rhyme knowers (as opposed to the clique of beautiful socialites :-)
A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from his

name plate that the teller's name is Paddy Whack. So he says, "Mr. Whack,
I'd like to get a loan to buy a boat and go on holiday."

Paddy Whack looks at the frog in disbelief and asks how much he wants to
borrow. The frog says £30,000. The teller asks his name and the frog says
his name is Kermit Jagger and that it's OK, he knows the bank manager.

Paddy explains that $30,000 is a substantial amount of money and that he
would need to secure some collateral against the loan and asks if he has
anything he can use as collateral. The frog says, "Sure. I have this," and
produces a tiny pink elephant, about half an inch tall,
bright pink and perfectly formed.

Very confused, Paddy explains that he'll have to consult with the manager
and disappears into a back office. He finds the manager and says, "There's
a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to
borrow 30 grand. And he wants to use this as collateral." He holds up the
tiny pink elephant "I mean, what the fuck is this?"

The bank manager replies, "It's a knick knack, Paddy Whack. Give the frog
a loan, his old man's a Rolling Stone."

The worst website I've seen in a long time, but even the poor graphics and an out-of-date price list couldn't stop us having a great evening yesterday and leaving us thinking this is one of the nicest restaurants in the area. :)

Hey Toaster. You mentioned a demo for Evil Genius was due soon. But have you seen these videos of gameplay footage and interviews?

The Guardian have posted an intriguing article about online games. There is no new info here for game geeks, but it's an interesting insight for those who've not experienced them, and for those who have, it's interesting to see the journalists point of view.

Not particularly funny. Not particularly well made. But I know too many people who sounds like this in order to let it go by unblogged.
