From Slashdot - Volvo self-parking car (video link)
Of course the gap demonstrated is HUGE, but it's still cool to see the driver wandering off. And it's not a patch of Surferbill's 'pocket parking' in which he can get a car into a space two matchsticks bigger than the vehicle (seeing is believing).

Is it just me, or was there an earthquake this morning at 3.56am CET? I've just been woken up abruptly by what seemed to be a loud bang that I can't explain. When I look outside there are a couple of apartments with lights on, but nothing overly unusual.

I'll delete this post if there's nothing on the news about it through the day, but if you were woken up too, let me know.

(comments:0) Definitions of the SI units: The binary prefixes
I started seeing symbols like KiB, GiB and TiB on some websites when talking about file sizes. Those of us who have been in computing since before the dot-com bubble and the unwashed masses know all about KB, GB and TB, but this knocked me for six. Time to unlearn and relearn!

Apparently, the launch codes for the US Minuteman nuclear missiles were "00000000". And the launch officers knew, so they could have launched them. (Credit: Surfside)

Being young, arrogant, and occasionally slightly socially inadequate, the New Media and IT industries have been spectacularly bad at getting people ready for having to look after others. Management was either 'the enemy', 'something to be avoided' or 'easy and anyone can do it'.
In fact, people management is a learned skill, and one that many people don't take the time to learn.
We will run through the bare essentials of what you are most likely to get problems with, and some strategies for coping with having to get people to do things.

I found a technology school called DigiPen. One of their courses is game programming. Some of the project get released on the website. A few have even won independant game dev awards. So far two games have caught my eye: Bontago (which seems like cometetive Jenga) and Ice Wars (which looks like worms but you give every unit their orders before the action phase is triggered.) They also do 3d modelling and have a couple of galleries of student animations which might be fun!

One of the biggest problems in AI is teaching a machine what is 'common sense'. Back in 1984, Doug Lenat joined MCC and started entering facts into a database called Cyc, and simultaneously started developing software to derive inferences from those facts. He hoped teaching a machine about the world would enable it to apply common sense to logical deduction. In 1994, right on schedule, MCC spun out the Cyc project and started Cycorp in order to commercialize the software. Cyc is the biggest ever database about the world.
